Dermatology Technician

New River Veterinary Specialists opened in June 2022 and is a custom-built 15,000-square foot, state-of-the-art facility located 12 miles from the beaches of Hilton Head and 25 minutes to Savannah, GA. We are actively hiring licensed, credentialed, or experienced veterinary technicians to join our dermatology department. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about veterinary medicine, hard-working, compassionate and empathetic with people as well as animals, reliable, organized, enjoy client communication and work well with our diverse team.

New River is equipped with all the advanced technology you’d expect from a custom-built state-of-the-art facility. Including a USP 800 biological cabinet and oncology suite, full in-house lab, 16-slice helical CT, 1.5 Tesla MRI, fluoroscopy, interventional radiology suite, multiple ultrasounds, in-house blood bank and component therapy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, minimally invasive surgery, full-service sports medicine and rehabilitation department, and a dedicated intensive care unit including long-term mechanical ventilation.

The NRVS team currently includes 2 Internists, 1.5 Criticalists, 2 Surgeons (1 also Certified in Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine), 2 Neurologists, 9 Emergency doctors, one VTS-ECC and an amazing team of technicians, assistants and CSRs. Dermatology technicians will work directly with our Dermatologist while also participating in cytology readings, patient care, diagnostic tests, general anesthesia of dermatology patients, and client education. Natural skills with small animals are a must, but we are also looking for someone who has great communication skills with clients and their fellow team members. This position also requires someone self-motivated, a quick thinker and can multitask in high paced environments.

We are looking for dermatology technicians who are proficient with the following skill sets:

    • All aspects of animal nursing care (lab sample collection, surgical prep/monitoring/post-operative care, injections in all routes of administration, IV catheter placement, phone and in-person triage, medical record-keeping, client education (both verbal and written), basic drug calculations, ability to follow direction, working with treatment/flow sheets, understanding of commonly used veterinary medications, microscopic evaluation, patient rounds)
    • Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task efficiently
    • Work well in a team setting. Communication skills between teammates is especially important!
    • Schedule appointments/work with the Specialty Care Coordinator for schedule coordination
    • Obtain a comprehensive history from clients, including TPR & weight
    • Admit and/or discharge patients
    • Hold/restraint of patients
    • Venipuncture (including IV/IM/SQ injections, IV catheter placement)
    • Able to administer medications via PO, SQ, IM, or IV
    • Have comprehensive knowledge of basic monitoring for patients under sedation
    • Participate in a double-check system for prescriptions /refills
    • Prepare samples/prescriptions for shipping
    • Patient work-ups/assist with procedures
    • Create estimates for procedures and inpatients and submit them for clinician approval
    • Cytology
    • Microscope operation & care
    • Run in-hospital blood work
    • Coordinate consults from other departments when needed
    • Enter charges for client invoices for both inpatients and outpatients
    • Prepare samples/ order lab work
    • Track lab samples
    • Stock / clean exam room and treatment area
    • Maintain department’s supplies and special orders
    • Prepare supply list for ordering
    • Monthly audit expiration dates on supplies
    • Change stains as needed
    • Update and maintain Allergan stock for immunotherapy
    • Prepare patient immunotherapy
    • Client education /explain treatment plan /review discharge instructions with owner/discuss medications
    • Communicate with referring veterinarians and other specialty practices as needed
    • Callbacks, confirmation calls and follow-up calls
    • Demonstrate critical thinking skills when talking with clients to assess concerns, urgency and interventional needs
    • Follow through with client conversations to ensure appropriate action has taken place and questions have been answered
    • Record all client communications in the communication log
    • Demonstrate an ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
    • Demonstrate an advanced ability to multitask and prioritize tasks
    • Display superior communication skills with other technicians and doctors to ensure that all daily tasks are completed, and client needs are met
    • Display an ability to navigate challenging conversations with clients. Anticipate conversations that may be highly emotionally charged or challenging and address them accordingly
    • Display advanced knowledge of common dermatologic disease processes so that client questions and concerns can be answered accurately and efficiently
    • Communicate with professionalism, courtesy, and warmth in all interactions with clients
    • Provide clients with basic patient updates excluding details regarding prognosis, diagnosis and lab results
    • Accurately prepare patients for discharge to client
    • Dispense all medications to go home as prescribed
    • Provide compassionate care to patients and clients
    • Conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks
    • Perform physical assessments; record observations in electronic medical records
    • Explain necessary follow-up and homecare instructions on patient discharges

A minimum of 2 years of emergency/specialty hospital is required or an LVT/CVT/RVT with previous dermatology experience. Experienced LVT with strong microscope knowledge and cytology reading skills is a must.
